If you somehow weren't already convinced, here are 10 photos of Cinque Terre that'll make you want to visit.
◈ CURRENCY: Euro €
◈ LANGUAGE: The spoken language in Italy is Italian, but Italy is one of those countries where, depending on which region you travel to — north or south, the dialect changes quite a bit. For example, there is “Roman Italian,” but in Naples and the Campania Region, people also speak Neapolitan. Then there’s Sicily, where Sicilian is spoken and may as well be its own language.
◈ TRANSPORTATION: “Regional” trains are the standard if you’re taking a quick day trip to a city — typically 30 minutes to an hour away, but if you’re traveling further, a high-speed train is the way to go! They can reach speeds of 186 mph, getting you to your destination significantly faster. In Italy, these fast-train companies are Trenitalia and Italo. A popular search site is Omio, which has a really helpful filter that allows you to filter tickets from both companies ( a major plus! ) depending on various factors like the fastest, the cheapest, or your desired departure time.
◈ FOOD CULTURE: In Italy, food is meant to be enjoyed, and meals are consumed leisurely. This means a waiter will never stop by your table with the check, seconds after you put down the fork. Meals are meant to be spent catching up with friends and loved ones (sometimes for hours) so just let the waiter know when you’re ready to pay.
Food is served in courses; for example, “primi” refers to the first course of a meal, typically consisting of warm dishes like pasta, risotto, or soup, and usually without meat or fish. Then there’s “secondi,” which refers to the second course, which typically features meat, fish, or other protein-based dishes. Then there’s “dolci”, dessert time!
