Sorrento – The best city to base yourself when visiting Capri, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, Herculaneum, and Amalfi Coast

Sorrento, a cute seaside town filled with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and delicious gelato shops is the perfect place to base yourself when exploring this region of Italy. I’ve stayed in the summer, and during the Holidays for Christmas, and both times were lovely. Its proximity to sites and ease of transportation makes it ideal as a base since you can easily walk to the train station and take the Circumvesuviana to visit Pompeii and Herculaneum and visit the Volcano Vesuvius. You can also easily take the SITA bus to Amalfi and Positano or walk to the Ferry terminal for a day trip to Capri.

  • Capri / 20 minutes
  • Pompeii / 20 minutes
  • Mount Vesuvius / 30 minute bus from Pompeii
  • Herculaneum / 40 minutes
  • Positano / 1 hour
  • Amalfi / 1.5 hours

where to eat

Cafe Latino
site | reviews

Walking through souvenir shops, you will notice that lemons are plastered everywhere, and that’s because Sorrento is known for its lemons which are 3-4 times the size of most. Cafe Latino is a lounge, bar, and restaurant located in the center of a lemon garden, offering the most authentic ambiance in Sorrento.

English Inn
site | reviews

Depending on the length of your trip you may have had your fair share of Italian food. If so, I recommend the English Inn which serves the best fish and chips. It’s located across from Cafe Latino and with its bright yellow exterior, you won’t miss it.

Gelateria Primavera
site | reviews

Gelateria Primavera is located on Corso Italia, the same lovely pedestrian-only street as the previous two recommendations. Here you will find walls lined with photos of Italian and American celebrities who have visited this popular Geleteria, I believe I even spotted a photo of the Pope.

They offer a great section of sorbets and fresh flavors such as lemon which is a classic in Sorrento. I tend to go for rich and creamy so Nutella and Ferrero Rocher were my go-to, however with so many to choose from, don’t be shy to ask for a sample.
